The Filipino-Chinese community has long been a cornerstone of Cebuano society, playing a pivotal role in shaping Cebu into the progressive hub it is today. Along with their drive and determination, the community proudly carries its rich Chinese heritage, adhering to unique cultural practices that are beautifully preserved and celebrated.
At the heart of these traditions is the Ting Hun, a centuries-old Chinese engagement ceremony that holds deep cultural significance within Cebu’s Filipino-Chinese families. This cherished tradition of matchmaking and gift-giving continues to be a day of profound importance for two individuals embarking on their journey of love.
On May 23, 2025, an opulent Ting Hun celebration unfolded, with DiaGold showcasing its exquisite jewelry collection, perfectly suited for a union steeped in Chinese culture and traditions. Their “Love & Traditions” jewelry line, directly inspired by the Ting Hun ceremony, was prominently featured during NUSTAR’s “Beloved: A Ting Hun Celebration.”
During Ting Huns, the bride traditionally takes center stage. By presenting gifts to the bride and her family, the groom and his family offer assurance that she will be well-provided for. These exchanged gifts are typically pieces of jewelry such as rings, bracelets, bangles, necklaces and watches.
The evening was a warm and lively cultural spectacle, perfectly encapsulating the centuries-old tradition of love. DiaGold’s craftsmanship and expertise in creating keepsake treasures that transcend time were evident in each displayed jewelry piece, designed to carry a legacy for generations.
Adding to the visual splendor, the event’s mock bride and groom graced the runway, adorned in contemporary Qiapaos and Zhongshan suits. These modern interpretations of traditional Chinese attire were designed and reimagined by Cebuano designers Marichu Tan and Protacio Empaces. The bride, along with her bridesmaids, sported intricately styled Chinese coiffures, showcasing elegance and opulence from head to toe.
Tan and Empaces’ modern take on traditional Chinese wear for both men and women thoughtfully retained the cultural significance of Chinese heritage, positioning it within a contemporary context without compromising its traditional elements. Embroidered floral motifs adorned the brightly colored ensembles; delicate floral beadwork graced mesh skirts, structured bodices and Mandarin-collared suits; and fitted gowns featured sweep trains and pouf skirts.
The jewelry showcased was more than just accessories; these beautiful heirlooms told stories of a legacy forever preserved through the intricate art of jewelry making. A gold floral lariat, a diamond tennis choker with a square emerald pendant, a midnight-blue and colorless diamond-encrusted choker necklace and brilliant Figaro chains were among the stunning pieces highlighted during the ceremony.
The prevalence of Ting Huns in the Filipino-Chinese community underscores a shared commitment: not only to preserve a tradition of love that has defined Chinese marital unions but also to uphold Chinese culture through art. As it is a celebration of love, it is also a vibrant tribute to a culture that has beautifully endured, thanks to the persistence of a community adamant in keeping its heritage alive through rituals, symbols and stories passed from one generation to the next.
