The Chinese community across the Philippines — particularly in Cebu — has long been a partner in our business, cultural and community projects.
During my early years in Cebu, in the mid-1960s, I witnessed the growth of numerous Chinese socio-civic and business establishments such as the White Gold store, Chinese restaurants, the Majestic Theater and many others.
The Chinese community has been active in the Lions Clubs, the Cebu Jaycees, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the American Chamber, the Zonta Clubs and more. In education, schools like Sacred Heart School for Boys (now Sacred Heart School–Ateneo de Cebu), Cebu Eastern College and the University of Cebu offered enriched curricula in languages, science, sociology and many other fields. Chinese students consistently excelled in business and science projects.
Filipino-Chinese cuisine, once served in places like the White Gold and Majestic restaurants, became popular staples at grand weddings, conventions and various national events held in Cebu. Many still consider Chinese pancit canton and bihon guisado, siopao and siomai and desserts like buchi as unmatched favorites.
Each year, a special day is dedicated to celebrating Filipino-Chinese relations. I have personally been fortunate to meet and work alongside members of the Chinese community.
