What really is Suroy Suroy Sugbo? Its essence is beyond words. One has to experience it.
How did it start? I can only recall that the concept of countryside tourism originated in the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, led by then-President Francis Monera and a committee group composed of Jun Muntuerto, Tess Chan and myself. I can’t recall the names of the other directors.
The concept was presented to then-Governor Gwen Garcia, who readily endorsed the project to the various towns. The then Tourism Department became an active partner in the project.
Both locals and tourists from across the globe found Suroy Suroy to be a rich showcase of Cebu’s culture: its roots, natural beauty and the present wealth of each town.
The routes of the Suroy Suroy include visits to various churches, historic landmarks, native food and delicacies, beaches and more.
Tourists collected and bought souvenirs, food and other items, which helped boost the economy of the towns.
My doctoral classes from across the Philippines joined the Suroy Suroy tours. The media covered the events and thus, Suroy Suroy became a major tourism and cultural program.
