ON THE morning of Friday, June 6, 2025, Muslim communities across Cebu City gathered in solemn observance of Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s most sacred holidays. Special prayers were held at key locations including Plaza Independencia, the Al Khariah Mosque in Barangay Mambaling and a fire-damaged mosque in Sitio Paradise Tres, Barangay Kinasang-an.

Hundreds of worshippers convened at Plaza Independencia, standing shoulder to shoulder in their finest attire, offering prayers of gratitude, devotion and reflection. At the Al Khariah Mosque, the congregation not only performed the Eid prayers but also conducted the traditional ritual of animal sacrifice. Goats were slaughtered as a symbolic act of obedience and generosity, with the meat distributed to the local community, especially those in need.

Despite the challenges faced by the congregation in Sitio Paradise Tres, whose mosque was recently damaged by fire, worshippers gathered for prayer in an inspiring display of faith and resilience. Their devotion did not go unnoticed, as Mayor-elect Nestor Archival visited the community, offering support and donating butane stoves to aid in their recovery.

Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham in Judeo-Christian tradition) to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) in obedience to God’s command. In the end, God intervened and provided a ram as a substitute, symbolizing mercy and submission to divine will. The festival is marked by communal prayers, acts of charity and the ritual sacrifice of animals, reflecting themes of faith, sacrifice and compassion.
