ABELLANA National School’s Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) and student volunteers led an outreach program for fire victims in the Badjao community at Sitio Vyking Gymnasium, Mambaling, on March 13, 2025.
The program was made possible through the generous support of Cebu Ultimate Catwalk Superstars and contributions from Abellana students, who donated food and essential goods.
The initiative was also supported by Louise Nicole Rosit Calabroso, Little Miss Global 2nd Runner-Up, and Hanna Gen Suwa, Mini Miss Global Rising Star, both of whom proudly represented the Philippines in the international pageant.
“My heart is full knowing that we filled not just their stomachs, but also their hearts—not only with food and material aid, but with the love we shared,” said Carlix Navaja, the current SSLG BOD 11 of ANS.
“Even small efforts—like donating food, volunteering time, or simply sharing kindness—can create a big impact. It is not just an act of giving, but a work of heart,” said Aerona Sabello, the current SSLG President of ANS. Sunday’s fire displaced nearly 1,000 residents. Most of the houses were made of light materials.
In the early hours of March 2, a devastating fire broke out in Sitio Badjaowan-Naba, Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City, displacing families and individuals. The blaze erupted around 1:14 a.m., marking one of the most severe incidents during the city’s Fire Prevention Month. The fire’s rapid spread was exacerbated by the area’s dense population and the prevalence of lightweight housing materials.
As earlier reported by SunStar, a total of 195 families were affected, as of 6:49 p.m. Sunday, March 16, according to data from the Department of Social Welfare Services. The damage to property was estimated at P1.55 million.
The fire reached the third alarm before being declared under control at 2:29 a.m. and fire out at 3:05 a.m. Firefighters from Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City assisted in containing the blaze.
