

FOLLOWING the back-to-back fires in Barangays Basak and Canjulao, the financial assistance for over 200 displaced families is already being processed by the Lapu-Lapu City Government.
Catherine Ladaga, head of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), told SunStar Cebu on Monday, June 2, 2025, that there is still no schedule for the distribution of the cash assistance.
Ladaga said renters will receive P5,000 each while those with partially damaged homes will be given P10,000. Residents whose houses were totally destroyed will get P30,000.
Additionally, sharers from the totally damaged homes will receive P8,000 each.
As of Saturday, May 31, the damage assessment conducted by the CSWDO revealed that 34 households comprising 194 families and 382 individuals were affected by the fires.
Housing damage by tenure shows that among owners, 15 homes were completely destroyed and three sustained partial damage.
The damage was most severe among renters, with 175 homes totally damaged and no reports of partial damage.
Additionally, one home under the sharer status was totally damaged, with no partial damage reported.
Affected homes
In Canjulao, at least 26 households comprising 36 families and 181 individuals were affected by the disaster.
Owners bear the brunt of the damage, with 22 homes reported as totally damaged and four partially damaged.
Among renters, six homes were totally damaged, while two homes sustained partial damage. One home was reported as totally damaged among sharers, with no partial damage reported.
Officials have provided essential food and non-food assistance to evacuees, including infants and senior citizens, who are being housed at the Canjulao Elementary School gymnasium and the Basak gymnasium.
On Friday morning, May 30, the two fires erupted minutes apart, reaching fourth alarm status and prompting an extensive emergency response from Mandaue and Cebu cities.
Firefighters announced the fires were fully extinguished past 11 a.m.
Both fires reported no fatalities but a 40-year-old man sustained injuries in the Canjulao fire.
Ladaga said relocation efforts are still pending, awaiting the City Council’s meeting. / DPC
