PRIME Integrated Waste Solutions (PWS), a developer and operator of materials recovery facilities (MRFs) in the Philippines, has commenced the sale of verified plastic credits.

This new offering aims to help businesses offset their plastic footprint, meet sustainability objectives and reduce their environmental impact.

Since its launch in January, PWS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Prime Infra, has already sold over one million credits. This volume is roughly equivalent to removing 700 average-sized cars’ worth of plastic from the environment.

“Our goal is to help businesses integrate sustainability into their operations by providing them with an easier, measurable solution for reducing their plastic impact on the environment,” said Cara Peralta, Prime Infra market sector lead for waste.

The plastic credits are generated from PWS’ state-of-the-art facility in Cebu City, one of two MRFs operated by the company in the Philippines, the other being in Pampanga.

These credits enable companies to fulfill their obligations under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law, which mandates them to recover and account for a percentage of their generated plastic waste.

Peralta emphasized PWS’ unique capability: “With our modern, high-capacity facilities, PWS is uniquely positioned to generate verified plastic credits at scale and with greater efficiency, giving businesses a reliable partner for meeting their sustainability and and EPR goals.”

How it works

Businesses purchasing credits from PWS receive a plastic waste diversion credit certificate detailing information such as plastic type, source and mode of recovery.

PWS utilizes a digital tracking platform to ensure data accuracy, verifiability and adherence to industry standards. The company’s modern waste facilities employ advanced equipment to maximize resource recovery and reduce landfill volumes, thereby mitigating harmful methane emissions from decomposing organic waste.

PWS’ plastic credits are now available to businesses of all sizes across various industries.

Prime Infra, the infrastructure arm of Filipino businessman Enrique Razon Jr., focuses on building assets that support urgent sustainability priorities, including energy, clean water access and waste management.

The company said it is committed to ensuring its investments are socially relevant, helping customers and stakeholders achieve decarbonization goals, multiply social benefits and promote inclusive economic growth. / KOC
