CEBU City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia said on Monday, April 7, 2025, that the City is currently evaluating whether the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) would be better managed by the City Government or the National Government.

This, as City Hall has yet to complete the long-awaited renovation and expansion of the hospital.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, Garcia responded to reporters’ questions about potentially turning over the management of the CCMC to the National Government, similar to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

He said his primary concern is to determine which management structure would ultimately be more advantageous and beneficial for the people of Cebu City.

“I want to know what are the advantages and disadvantages. From there, I will tell if it should be or it should not be,” he said.

The issue on CCMC’s management and completion surfaced following a request from the City Council for an update on the hospital’s current status and the challenges hindering its full completion.

The inquiry comes after the bidding process for the construction of the eighth to 10th floors of the medical facility was completed.

“The service there, the people, the doctors, the nurses, the medicines, etcetera, that is not politics… We serve everyone,” said Garcia, while citing that everyone is served regardless of political interests.

The City’s Supplemental Budget 1, passed by the City Council on March 26, allocated P210 million for the completion of three additional floors of the CCMC.

Garcia sought this additional funding as the Cebu Medical Society had yet to turn over a P205 million private donation intended for the hospital’s completion. / JPS
