CLAUDINE Flores, Denise Mae Codis and Cherry Ann Virador each stumbled into journalism by chance, but their personal journeys and challenges have shaped their passion for the field.
Claudine, who never envisioned herself as a journalist, was deeply impacted by a family land dispute. Initially drawn to human rights or law, she later discovered journalism’s power to amplify the voices of the oppressed. Encouraged by her father, a dedicated newspaper reader, she ventured into campus journalism. Despite having less than a year of reporting experience, Claudine’s fresh perspective as a Gen Z reporter allows her to craft stories that resonate with both younger and older audiences. She believes women have made invaluable contributions to the media industry, citing influential figures like Betty Go Belmonte and Maria Ressa. At SunStar Cebu, she saw firsthand the strength of women who stood firm in their principles, shaping the paper and making a lasting difference.
Uncertain
Denise, a 2024 graduate, entered journalism uncertain of what the future held. Though the journey was tough, the impact of her writing fueled her determination. She learned to prioritize the needs of the people over her own fears, realizing that storytelling, especially uncovering difficult truths, is central to her craft. While journalists’ modest incomes are a reality, Denise finds satisfaction in contributing to society and educating readers, using every day as an opportunity to grow and refine her skills.
Cherry, who never planned to pursue journalism, found herself captivated by the role journalists play in society when choosing a college program. Despite the financial challenges, she sees journalism as a calling, driven by the fulfillment of uncovering the truth and making an impact. As a woman in a male-dominated field, Cherry faces gender biases and safety concerns but uses these challenges as motivation to push forward. She believes women’s perspectives are vital in shaping a balanced and inclusive media landscape, and her presence in the newsroom helps carve out space for more women in journalism.
Though each faced different paths to journalism, these women are united in their belief in its power to shape society and the media’s role in advocating for truth and equality. (Juan Carlo de Vela)
