
A "HABAL-HABAL" (motorcycle-for-hire) driver, identified as Carl, is in critical condition after being shot in Zone 5, Purok Bombay, Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City, around 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
He is currently at Eversley Childs Sanitarium and General Hospital, fighting for his life after undergoing emergency surgery.
According to Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) spokesperson Mercy Villaro, Carl had picked up a male passenger. Upon reaching their destination, the passenger unexpectedly pulled out a firearm and shot Carl in the neck.
Authorities received the report 30 minutes later. Carl was immediately rushed to the hospital.
"The victim is alive but in critical condition," Villaro confirmed, adding that Carl requires further head surgery. His situation remains uncertain.
The unidentified suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
The MCPO has launched a full investigation, reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing potential witnesses.
"Our investigators are following all available leads to track down this individual and bring him to justice," Villaro stated.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, with police exploring possibilities such as personal conflict or a targeted attack.
Carl's family plans to file a frustrated murder case, citing Article 248 of the Revised Penal Code, against the suspect.
The incident has alarmed the community and highlights ongoing safety concerns for habal-habal drivers and the public.
The MCPO is committed to apprehending the perpetrator and preventing similar violent acts. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided.
