MANDAUE City barangay captains welcomed the new law postponing the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) from Dec. 1, 2025, to November 2026.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act 12232 on Aug. 13, 2025, a new law postponing the BSKE, extending the term of current officials, and changing the term length to four years for future ones.
Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president and Canduman Barangay Captain Dante Borbajo said the extension was well-received by barangay officials, as it would allow them to continue their programs and projects.
Borbajo called on all barangay leaders in Mandaue City to use the additional time to deliver honest and effective service and make the most of the opportunity given to them.
Cambaro Barangay Captain Maricar Cañete also supported the decision, saying the two-year term would have been too short for proper project implementation.
Mantuyong Barangay Captain Julius Caesar Lumapas Areopagita said the extension brought no special advantage to incumbents and that operations in their barangay would continue as usual.
Opao Barangay Captain Nixon “Jojo” Dizon said his barangay is ready for elections regardless of the date, but emphasized that public service remains their main priority.
While most barangay leaders backed the postponement, some residents expressed disappointment.
A resident from Barangay Centro said she was ready to vote in December and has been hoping for a change in local leadership.
Others welcomed the delay, noting it would give unregistered family members more time to complete their voter registration.
The last BSKE was held on Oct. 30, 2023. / CAV
