THE Ironman 70.3 Lapu-Lapu concluded peacefully and in an orderly manner, with no major incidents reported throughout the international triathlon event on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025.
Lt. Col. Christian Torres, spokesperson of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO), said the entire race — from the 1.9-kilometer swim to the 90-kilometer bike course and the final 21.1-kilometer run — proceeded without significant disruptions.
He said spectators and residents largely followed event rules and safety guidelines, such as keeping pets and livestock secured and refraining from crossing the race route while the event is ongoing.
Only minor incidents were recorded. One participant suffered a self-inflicted fall along the bike course in Barangay Agus. The athlete reportedly sustained minor injuries but was not admitted to any medical facility.
Another competitor reportedly lost consciousness on the run course, while another triathlete experienced a related issue during the bike course but managed to continue.
Security
A total of 800 personnel were deployed to ensure safety and order along the race route.
Of this number, 400 came from the LCPO, while the rest included personnel from the Regional Police Office, Philippine Coast Guard, Maritime Police, City Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office, barangay tanods, and other force multipliers such as volunteers.
Torres said deployment will continue until the conclusion of the awarding ceremony, with some security personnel remaining at key venues, including athlete accommodations.
He added that the substantial deployment was necessary as the bike course extended to Barangay Subabasbas and other areas, requiring widespread coverage.
Crowd management remained effective, and authorities received no reports of jaywalking or unruly behavior among spectators.
Torres also confirmed that the Iron Kids Lapu-Lapu event, held earlier on Friday at Dusit Thani in Barangay Punta Engaño, also concluded successfully without incident.
Now in its 11th year, the Ironman 70.3 Lapu-Lapu drew 1,400 athletes from 49 countries.
The sporting event was part of the globally recognized Ironman triathlon series, featuring a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike ride, and a 21.1-kilometer run, designed to test endurance and mental toughness. / DPC
