LAPU-Lapu City commemorated its 64th Charter Day on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, with a vibrant celebration held at the Hoopsdome in Barangay Gun-ob.
Mayor-elect Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King Chan and Congressman-elect Junard “Ahong” Chan, joined by Vice Mayor Celedonio Sitoy, led the celebration with heartfelt messages celebrating Lapu-Lapu City’s transformation from a village into a thriving and modern urban center.
“From a quiet fishing town to a dynamic and progressive highly urbanized city, we have come a long way,” Chan said. “Today, Lapu-Lapu City stands as one of the most vibrant urban centers in the Visayas home to a thriving tourism industry, modern infrastructure, and hardworking, resilient citizens who continue to bring pride to our city,” he added.
King Chan reflected on Lapu-Lapu City’s 64-year journey, highlighting the Oponganons’ rich heritage as descendants of Datu Lapulapu, the challenges the city has overcome, and the many achievements it has celebrated over the decades.
“Lapu-Lapu City is our safe place where everyone is respected, where everyone has a voice, and where everyone is empowered and free,” King Chan said.
“We will continue to work for progress, for all sectors, from our city center down to our remotest barangays. Our promise is that no one will be left behind,” she added.

The officials reaffirmed their commitment during the Charter Day celebration, vowing to secure national funding to address the city’s urgent needs, including additional classrooms, daycare centers, super health centers and the completion of the Lapu-Lapu City Hospital to improve public services for residents.
