THE first phase of the Lapu-Lapu City Government's socialized housing project in Barangay Calawisan has been steadily progressing since its official launch on March 3.

The initiative is part of the City's efforts to address the housing needs of low-income families.

The P219-million project, implemented by Zumyrphil Construction Inc., will feature 1,000 housing units spread across several five-story buildings on a two-hectare property.

These units are intended to provide safe, affordable, and decent homes for the city's urban poor sector, many of whom have long struggled with unstable or informal housing arrangements.

In a Facebook post, Congressman-elect and outgoing Mayor Junard Chan said: “This is our legacy, our gift to the people of Lapu-Lapu before I step down as your mayor! Our socialized housing project is almost complete!”

As of June, construction efforts remain on track. City officials confirmed that Building 1 has reached the second-floor level, with work on the third floor scheduled to begin within the next two weeks. Site engineers noted the project's efficient workflow and consistent manpower as key factors behind its smooth progress.

The local government sees this initiative as a model for future housing projects in the city. With urban migration and population growth continuing to put pressure on housing supply, Lapu-Lapu officials are hopeful that the Calawisan project will demonstrate how public-private collaboration can successfully deliver results for marginalized communities.

Beneficiaries will be selected through a fair and transparent process, prioritizing families in critical need of relocation or those affected by previous demolitions.

Once completed, residents will gain access to a community equipped with basic amenities and safe living conditions. (Yvon Maratas, Benedicto College intern)
