We probably have had our fill of bananas through the years.

It’s the easiest fruit to bring to school. It can be deep-fried, caramelized and skewered. It can be fried and covered in white sugar for fritters. Banana cue can be found at almost every government office. Bananas are almost at every buffet that serves “fresh fruits in season.”

But when was the last time we had a banana split? Interestingly enough, we’ve somehow forgotten about this classic dessert.

Aug. 25 is celebrated as National Banana Split day! Here are a few reasons why the Banana Split split remains to be a sweet treat to be reckoned with:

More fruits

It’s called banana split but the original recipe features more fruits! Some chunks of pineapple are integral. Plus, cherries complete the look. The vitamin C in the pineapples and the melatonin in cherries are known to carry health benefits like contributing to a stronger immune system or reducing risk for hypertension, respectively.

Nuts galore

Banana splits have walnuts in them. These keep people boosted with energy without pushing them to gain more weight. Walnuts are also a good source of Omega-3s and lead to a healthier gut.

Fun history

Every time you order a banana split, remember that a pharmacist by the name of David Evans Strickler arguably invented the banana split back in his pharmacy in 1904. He was 23 and was an apprentice for Tassel’s Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Banana for the win

The banana is a popular fruit not only for its taste but its all-round benefits. It contains potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Manganese and more! It’s sweet without threatening blood sugar levels. Enjoying your ice cream with a banana definitely presents a healthier twist.

Everything nice

The best thing about a banana split? Being creative with it! Go to your favorite dessert place and try out its take on the classic ice cream concoction. Some have a ton of cream, others have chocolate sprinkles.
