AFP hosts ‘Race to Rebuild Limasawa’

LIMASAWA bore the brunt of Typhoon Odette (Rai) on Dec. 16, 2021, and was the worst hit municipality in Southern Leyte. Its fierce winds destroyed 90 percent of the houses and displaced 1,849 families. The remaining 10 percent were severely damaged. Over 4,000 coconut trees were either uprooted or damaged, almost wiping out their main source of livelihood.

Fishing boats were damaged too, due to the ferocity of the super typhoon. Transportation to and from the island, which can only be reached via a boat or a ship, became difficult. Electricity for the entire island was cut off. Because of this, the water pump is not operating, resulting in families in dire need of clean water.

But its people are determined to rise up from the rubble.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines, through the Visayan Command and the support of Philippine Navy, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Army and the Philippine Military Academy, is holding a virtual race dubbed “Race to Rebuild Limasawa.” Starting March 25 until April 30, participant can choose to either run, bike, ride a motorcycle or a big bike. This race intends to help the people of the island to rebuild not just their homes but their lives.

Limasawa is believed to be the site of the first mass on Philippine soil officiated by Father Pedro de Valderrama under the fleet of Ferdinand Magellan. Save the date. Register at Yakski Barbecue in Cebu IT Park. Be a hero. (PR)
