In a world where resilience in the face of adversity is the ultimate measure of strength, the women of the ICanServe Foundation Inc. Cebu have not only demonstrated unwavering resilience but have also become the embodiment of hope and determination. As October paints its canvas with rosy ribbons, these courageous warriors step into the spotlight, bearing not just the scars of their battle with breast cancer but also the unbreakable spirit that defines them.

For over two decades, this extraordinary group of women has dedicated their lives to combating breast cancer through early detection programs, medical assistance and unwavering support for survivors. As Pink October graces us with its presence, this article will dive into the inspiring stories of these resilient women and to amplify their vital message of awareness, screening and hope.

Empowerment of “I Can”

“With the acronym ICanServe, it gives us the notion that we can do anything!” shared one of the founding members, Me’Anne Solomon.

This empowering spirit has manifested in various aspects of their journey. From “I can eat, I can dance, I can have a photoshoot, even to I can shop,” their mission has become a symbol of resilience and determination. They’ve turned breast cancer from a diagnosis into a battle they can conquer together.

Bound together by a common mission

Each member of the ICanServe Foundation Inc. Cebu has a unique journey that brought them into this sisterhood of strength.

Myres, a breast cancer survivor since 2004, acknowledges the pivotal role of Tita Nelia and Tita Fely in her life. She, along with other survivors, met Kara Alikpala, the founder of ICanServe Foundation Inc. Philippines, in 2004. Together, they decided to establish their own branch in Cebu, driven by a deep-seated desire to help others on the same daunting journey.

Similarly, another member, who joined the foundation in 2013, found solace and purpose after being diagnosed just three months following her husband’s passing. Dimitra, diagnosed and operated on in 2003, had a tough journey, learning the hard way without any guidance. It was this personal struggle that inspired her to ensure that the next person wouldn’t have to face it alone. With Kara’s guidance, they launched the first forum in Cebu in 2008.

Roots in Manila, flourishing in Cebu

While the founders of ICanServe Foundation Inc. Philippines hail from Manila, the foundation’s presence has grown steadily in Cebu.

“The founders are from Manila. The founder is Kara Alikpala, but there are four of them who were diagnosed almost at the same time,” explained Me’Anne.

What began with just five members in Cebu, the foundation has grown significantly over the years. Their unwavering commitment and growing awareness have attracted more people to join their cause.

Strength in solidarity

The core members of ICanServe Foundation Inc. Cebu come from diverse backgrounds outside their noble cause. From advertising executives to nurses, human resource managers to hoteliers and even housewives, their diverse experiences contribute to the strength of their organization.

Together, they form a formidable team dedicated to supporting breast cancer patients and raising awareness.

Pillars of action

The foundation’s unwavering commitment to its mission is evident in its initiatives and programs. One such flagship project is “Cancer Chat,” a platform for creating awareness in partnership with various medical professionals and organizations. They host forums to provide crucial information, answer frequently asked questions and offer guidance.

Another impactful initiative is the “Pink Room,” which aims to bring breast consultation and screening closer to the people, especially those who may fear going to a hospital by having doctors available at malls. They offer free breast consultation, removing barriers that might prevent early detection.

Their dedication to raising awareness extends to turning the city pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Landmarks and establishments join in, lighting up pink to remind everyone of the importance of breast health.

Challenges

While progress has been made, challenges persist for breast cancer patients in Cebu, including the significant obstacle of treatment costs, which are often unaffordable. Fear of the unknown and the stigma associated with breast cancer also deter some from seeking help.

Members of ICanServe Foundation Inc. Cebu stress the importance of seeking scientific evidence-based treatments and avoiding alternative or supplemental medicine that may not have therapeutic claims or proper oversight.

Support and collaboration

The foundation welcomes support from individuals and communities, including sponsorships and donations. Their primary focus is on raising funds to provide free mammograms to indigent women, ensuring that early detection is accessible to everyone in need.

Inspiration for everyone

In the face of these challenges, the women of ICanServe Foundation Inc. Cebu stand as symbols of hope and resilience. They urge everyone to embrace early detection and seek support.

“Checking your breasts is a lifelong commitment for yourself and your loved ones,” they emphasize.

As they approach their 25th anniversary next year, the foundation is poised to continue making a difference in the lives of breast cancer patients and survivors. With their united spirit, they shine as beacons of hope, lighting the path towards a future free from the fear of breast cancer.

The women of ICanServe Foundation Inc. Cebu remind everyone that, no matter the storm, when people stand together with unwavering determination, they can conquer even the most daunting of challenges. Their message is clear: They can serve. You can serve. We can serve.

Together, people can empower, inspire, and create a world where breast cancer is not a death sentence but a battle that can be won, one step at a time.
