Enjoy ‘seafood in a bag’ in Cebu

If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty in the sweet and savory mess of Cajun-style seafood boils — the ones that you often see in your favorite “mukbang” videos — then you should definitely check out the latest Maretes CAJUN Seafood restaurant located on President Quirino St., Villa Aurora, Kasambagan, Cebu City.

“We named it ‘Maretes’ because we often hear it everywhere and simply because it’s trending. Additionally, the owners have a distinct concept for this restaurant,” said restaurant manager Mary Jean Cabahug.

Speaking of trends, this restaurant’s New Orleans-inspired components feature seafood in a bag mixed with the enticing aroma of Cajun, which has become increasingly popular over the years.

Cebu is swiftly emerging as one of the country’s premier culinary destinations, hence it’s no wonder why new restaurants like this are opening here and there with concepts that are both competitive and reasonably priced.

“I can say that this is the first-of-its-kind seafood concept in Cebu that is internationally inspired. When the word ‘seafood’ comes into the mind of the customers, there’s a misconception wherein they immediately think that it’s pricey. But in this restaurant, we make it affordable for them,” head chef Robert Balansag explained.

Before you get ready for the messy eating, this restaurant offers a beginner’s tip on what to get to ensure a satisfying seafood frenzy experience.

You can choose from a variety of perfectly seasoned seafood, including shrimp, crabs, mud crabs, punaw, mussels, oysters, halaan, squid, rock lobster and scallops. Next, choose your sauce from the following options: Cajun, Garlic Butter, Alavar, Coconut Curry and Mama’s Milk. Finally, you have a choice between the original, mild and spicy heat levels.

It’s the abundance of seafood that bursts of freshness and the bold, spicy flavors that will have customers coming back for more.
