‘Father of Sinulog’ launches book

“GO BACK to the past, experience the present and retain everything in the future.”

This is what David “Kuya Boy” Odilao Jr., the father of Sinulog, continuously advocated to the people as he launched his book entitled “My Life, My Legacy” on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023, at SM Seaside City Cebu. Friends and family showed their endless support and appreciation during the book launching. Guests included members of the fraternal order of Philippine Eagles, Freemasonry, Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary and other organizations in which the author has been associated with throughout his long life and these were also mentioned in his book.

During the program, speeches were delivered by special guests: Manuel Gordon, the chief entertainment officer of Advaux Publishing and Creatives, whom Odilao entrusted the production of the book; Rheneir Mora, who was together with Odilao in the process of the book completion; and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.

Odilao was the brains behind the country’s biggest festival in 1980, the first Sinulog sa Sugbo. He also started the Bahug-Bahug sa Mactan that, according to him, was the best re-enactment ever.

There’s no doubt that Odilao would leave behind a legacy because a lot of people can definitely attest to that. As the author stated in the very first pages of the book, he now realizes that even in his youth, he was a doer and, in his own way, he was an innovator.

“I couldn’t believe that a lot of people would show up. In fact, I just invited a few because I’m not really into my mobile phone; I’m more into the typewriter. But seriously, Kuya Rheneir summed it up perfectly: We need to share and write about our experiences so we never forget them,” Odilao said.

There were 200 initial copies of the book that was released in the event proper. However, the book was also made available on online shopping platforms. Also, it seems that they have a plan to consider a second volume.

In conclusion, Odilao expressed that he would like to let the readers realize that by sharing his experiences, he hopes to motivate others so they, too, will pursue their dreams no matter what. S
