WITH the growing number of people who enjoy cosplay, gaming, anime, art or any related hobbies for that matter, conventions like ARCHcon Cebu have also become more popular, having greatly influenced our local hobbyist community today.
Just like how the local creative industry has been receiving recognition for its talents, ARCHcon Cebu is ready to show that gamers, cosplayers, artists and the like can make changes for the community as well.
With the goal of raising awareness on these hobbies, ARCHcon’s campaign is to emphasize its message of being community-oriented by supporting hobbies and creating a sustainable platform through talks, workshops and activities that gather all hobbyists.
What is ARCHcon Cebu?
Sometime in July 2004, the Sacred Heart School–Ateneo de Cebu Anime, Manga, & The Gaming Brigade (SHS-AdC AMTG Brigade) conceptualized a hobby event called ARCHcon (Anime, Role-Playing, Comics and Hobbies) where they host charity events involving recreational activities.
From there, ARCHcon Cebu has become the premier event for hobbyists and enthusiasts in Cebu and the rest of the Visayas. It aims to be an open venue for people from all walks of life to freely showcase their creativity and innovation in celebration of their hobbies and interests with the local community.
ARCHcon Cebu showcases a wide array of popular hobbies among the youth such as exhibitions of craft in cosplay; toy and collectible figure displays; local and other comic artists demonstrating their works; video games and e-sports events; mobile games, board games and tabletop games, among others.
Every year, ARCHcon Cebu comes up with a theme such as Retro Gaming for 2016 and Aztech (a mix of aztec and technology) for 2017. This year, ARCHcon Cebu’s theme is ARCHcana (a mix of medieval and magic), which pays tribute to one of our late founders Mark Ranel, who has shared his love and passion for role-playing games, especially the Dungeons and Dragons.
Beneficiaries
With the tagline “a con with a cause,” ARCHcon Cebu raises funds every year to support charities and outreach activities under the Blue Plate Project. The various competitions including gaming, art and cosplay will help showcase the different communities with their respective beneficiaries, such as Kythe Foundation as the official cosplay competition beneficiary, the Cancervants (Cebu Chapter) as the official art competition beneficiary, and the DOTA Deaf-Mute Community as the official gaming competition beneficiary.
Expectations are high for ARCHcon Cebu, being the oldest and biggest hobby convention type event in Cebu City. Now on its 15th year, ARCHcon promises quality and an enjoyable experience, having something to offer hobbyists of any age and demographic.
