Florida Uytengsu-Young, a scion of a prominent Chinese-Filipino family, and the daughter of the founder of General Milling Corp. (GMC), has left an indelible mark on the educational landscape of Lapu-Lapu City. Her commitment to enhancing the quality of education and fostering growth opportunities for the community has been unwavering throughout her life.

Uytengsu-Young’s legacy is deeply entwined with GMC’s storied history. Her father, Don Tirso Uytengsu Sr., laid the foundation for GMC in 1958, which culminated in the establishment of the first flour mill in Lapu-Lapu City in 1961. Her husband, George K. Young Sr., played a pivotal role in shaping GMC’s future. Today, the company stands as a testament to its enduring vision, steered by the capable hands of Florida’s sons: George Young Jr., Hubert, and Kirk Steven.

The recent inauguration and handover of the two-story Home Economics Building at Pajo Elementary School on Sept. 5, 2023, epitomized Florida U. Young’s dedication to education and community development. The occasion was graced by notable dignitaries, including George Christian L. Young III, representing his father. Grand Floridian Holdings Inc. (GFHI) Executive Vice President Joselito “Toto” Fausto F. Parco and Finance Director Edwin Y. Kho were also in attendance.

Several stakeholders were also present, including Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Q. Chan, Lapu-Lapu City Lone District Rep. Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan, Department of Education Lapu-Lapu City Division Program Supervisor Dr. Herminia Leyson, Pajo Barangay Captain Lyndel T. Bullos and GPTA President Jimmy Cape, among others.

Previous Pajo Elementary School Principal Paz Tecson’s heartfelt appeal to GMC initiated this transformative journey. She reached out to the company, highlighting the urgent need to revitalize a dilapidated building that posed a threat to the safety and education of students. Chairman and president of GMC’s holdings company, Grand Floridian Holdings Inc. (GFHI), George Young Jr., immediately responded to the call for assistance, exemplifying the family’s commitment to making a positive impact.

The newly inaugurated Home Economics Building is a beacon of hope for Pajo Elementary School students. GFHI, under the stewardship of the Young family, constructed the facility and equipped it with a modern laboratory room for Home Economics education. Inside, students will acquire essential life skills, as the building boasts fully furnished spaces, including a bedroom, living room, dining room, and kitchen. The second floor offers a spacious classroom that will accommodate up to 50 students. The building is designed to help the Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) and the Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) students.

This donation reflects GFHI’s consistent dedication to fostering community growth and education. This is also in support of Republic Act 8525, or the Adopt-a-School Act of 1998.

George Christian L. Young III eloquently conveyed his grandmother’s vision, emphasizing the transformative power of education: “She had always believed that education is the great equalizer of opportunities. She believed that education is a right every person must have so that they can become not only responsible citizens but also contributing members of society.”

He further said that the Home Economics Building serves as a symbol of Florida’s enduring commitment to enhancing educational facilities in the province where she spent her youth. It also stands as an inspiration for the younger generation, encouraging them to strive for academic excellence and complete their education.

George Christian L. Young III represents the new generation of the Young family, resolute in carrying forward his late grandmother’s legacy.

This Home Economics Building is not the first collaboration between GFHI, GMC, and Pajo Elementary School. The nearby Don Tirso Uytengsu Building bears testimony to their ongoing partnership, alongside GMC’s participation in Pajo’s Brigada Eskwela program.

Pajo Elementary School Principal Melodina T. Wahing, in her acceptance speech, expressed her gratitude to GFHI and acknowledged that students in Grades 4 to 6 will benefit immensely from these facilities. She noted that this generous donation will instill pride and motivation among the pupils, empowering them for a brighter future.

The completion of this transformative project not only reinforces the enduring bond between GMC and Lapu-Lapu City but also underscores GMC’s steadfast commitment to its home since 1961. The partnership guarantees that Florida Uytengsu-Young’s legacy lives on, enriching the lives and education of countless individuals, and inspiring future generations to reach greater heights.
