THOU shall not hide this Christmas.

Being a ninong or ninang (godparent) is a responsibility. You knew what you were getting yourself into. Christmas is the season your inaanaks (godchildren) look forward to the most. And they are probably hunting you down.

But as a working class adult, it can be a hassle thinking about gifts for your inaanaks with the holiday hustle and bustle. Let's not forget, Christmas is the season for giving and forgiving (yes, you are forgiven for failing to remember them).

Here's a guide on how to be the best ninong or ninang to your inaanaks this Christmas.

1. Know what your inaanak likes

Find out what your inaanaks like by asking your kumare or kumpare. Surely, they will give you hints. If all else fails, try sneaking in a question in one of your conversations. If you are friends with them on Facebook, you can always browse through their feed.

2. Make a list, check it once and check it twice

When you visit shopping areas, it's always convenient to make a list. Aside from your long grocery list, include the gifts you wish to purchase for your inaanak. You'll be the best godparent by simply remembering them. Imagine forgetting one of your inaanaks, bah humbug!

3. Splurge your Christmas bonus on your inaanaks

Christmas only comes once a year. Why not spoil your inaanaks by buying them the gifts they truly love? No matter what the cost. Hey, you just received your 13th month pay and your Christmas bonus. Why don't you give love on Christmas pay, I mean, day? The look on their faces will be priceless.

4. Also, don't forget the practicality of your gifts

Don't give your inaanaks common gifts like mugs. They have a ton at home. Give them something they could use in an everyday setting. It could be something functional for school or something that will stimulate their mind like do-it-yourself toys or a good ol' fashioned book.

5. Don't make promises you can't keep

If you're tight on your budget or you don't have time to go shopping, be frank to your inaanaks. Tell them you can't give them gifts this holiday rather than giving them false hopes. We're pretty sure they'll understand. Okay, if you're really that busy, an angpao is a good last resort.

Tis the season of giving. Though it is not an obligation, giving gifts is a good way to express your care for them. Happy holidays!
