Kenneth Cobonpue stars in “Masterminds” pilot episode

FROM artists to entrepreneurs, ViveCast asks the questions you probably want to in a new educational video series called “Masterminds.” This avenue is where passionate and successful individuals talk about their passion, what they do, and how and why they do it—with a few nuggets of wisdom along the way.

Ever wonder how you can be a successful creative? Well, “Masterminds” is the place where you can get a little advice from one of the greats!

The pilot episode features a little chat with Kenneth Cobonpue, a world renowned, multi-awarded, industrial designer from Cebu known for his innovative designs integrating natural fibers and materials through unique handmade processes.

He talks about everything from how he started, what it took to get to where he is now and where he is going.

“I think design is about exposure. You have to be inspired not just from your own field but from other things. We have to understand what people need, how people live,” said Cobonpue.

He added: “I think whats more important (about it) is the inspiration it gives to young people—that they can make it. That we can make a difference in the world—whatever we do—not only in design and your profession. You can create something from your experiences, from your environment and to make something truly unique for the whole world to see.”

He continued by saying that he finds time every day to design. “Sometimes it comes, sometimes it doesn’t but what’s important is that—it’s like any sport—you devote a certain time (for it),” he said. “You have to force it and try to come up with something. And the more practice you have in this transition from idea to reality—the better you get at it.”

On a societal level, Cobonpue expresses his desire to help Cebu by (finally) making some sense out of public structures. “There are so many things we can improve in Cebu—starting first with our sidewalks. I think Cebu is a place made for cars—not for people. We should start designing this place in terms of livability, mobility—in terms of how people can move from one place to the other, but not using cars,” said Cobonpue.

“There’s a lot of other problems, but we’re there to try to solve these problems one step at a time,” he said.
