WATERFRONT Hotels and Casinos will be celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, otherwise known as the mooncake festival, as one of the most celebrated events in Chinese culture with a series of delectable mooncake offerings. Not everyone knows the history of the celebration and different story versions have circulated.
Chang-er, the goddess of the moon, fell in love with Hou Yi, a mythological Chinese archer. He drank a bottle of elixir and became immortal as a form of sacrifice. Due to this, Chang-er was banished from the immortal land and was separated forever. One night while pleading to the skies, Hou Yi saw an image of Chang-er on the moon and started offering fruits and mooncakes to express his longingness for his long-lost love.
The offering of fruits and mooncakes became a tradition now known as Mid-Autumn Festival or the Mooncake Festival. It is widely practiced in Chinese culture.
As a part of the group’s celebration, Waterfront Hotels and Casinos will be celebrating this year’s festival with traditional offers and exciting new additions to its best-selling mooncakes. These will be available from August 15 to October 6, 2023, across all properties: Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino, Lahug Cebu City; Waterfront Airport Hotel & Casino, Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan and, Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao, Lanang Davao.
The traditional mooncakes made by our very own Chinese chef, Low Yuen Kong, are available in red bean, ube, dauyong (tea), black sesame, and due to insistent public demand, lotus with double egg yolk starting at P288 per piece. These traditional mooncake variants will be available in Lahug, Mactan, and Davao for the duration of this year’s celebration.
A variety of snow skin mooncakes from Tin Gow will also be available this year in flavors: lotus with double egg yolk, dauyong, red bean, ube, and black sesame starting at P358 per piece.
The culinary team of Waterfront has always been a catalyst for innovation. Chef Tristan Encarnacion and pastry Chef Erwin Manes will be offering a variety of modern mooncakes which will be your new favorite for the season. Available in yema, strawberry almond, ube, lotus, and black sesame priced at P238 per piece or P888 for a box of four pieces.
The Mooncake selling booth will be available at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino from August 15, 2023, to October 6, 2023, and it will also be available at Metro Ayala from September 15 to 17, 2023 and for the whole month of September, guests can also enjoy the perfect pair of mooncakes and tea (or coffee) at the Lobby Lounge.
