New chapter for OPM: Rising Filipino artists

There has been an unprecedented rise in popularity and support for OPM (Original Pilipino Music) over the last few years as more people seem to have gained a newfound appreciation for the genre.

With the success of some of the biggest and current OPM artists such as Ben & Ben, The Juans, December Avenue, Zack Tabudlo, Moira Dela Torre, IV of Spades and more, it is quite evident that OPM is gradually turning into a new chapter.

As OPM continues to grow with time, more local musicians are slowly emerging on the scene, showcasing a fresh and wide variety of sound and musicality.

Here are some of the rising Filipino artists that you should be on the lookout for:

With the release of its debut single titled, “Fine Day,” the band Flu shows promises of becoming one of the freshest and newest sounds that OPM hasn’t seen in years. The band first came together when they were tasked to collaborate and fulfill the requirements for their music production class. This fateful collaboration eventually led them to go beyond the walls of the academe and decided to pursue a career in music. Flu’s feel-good music, largely due to its intoxicating mix of funk, R&B, soul and disco, is one of their strongest and most unique suites. Its latest single titled, “Ain’t Hidin,” is another must-listen that can get anyone in a lighter mood and get you slightly grooving to its beat.

August Wahh

A singer/songwriter on the rise, August Wahh is that one artist that you can see topping the music charts very soon. Originally from General Santos City, August moved to Manila to study music production but her journey as an artist started as early as childhood when her father taught her to sing. Her debut single titled “Sahara” is a funky and groovy song with an infectious beat that gets its listeners into a jovial mood. Her latest single titled “Blurred Lines” is another must-listen that is sure to get you hooked due to its laidback beat and dream pop feel that you can’t get enough of.

The Sundown

A Cebu-based band composed of five all-male members, The Sundown is another promising band that slowly made waves after releasing their most streamed song titled, “UwU.”

What started out as friends and musicians who were already fans of each others’ works, a tap of digital fate brought their talents together and, thus, The Sundown came to fruition.

The band is called The Sundown as the members believe that their music is a fitting soundtrack of the setting sun. Its latest track titled, “Last Dance,” encapsulates the longingness of wanting to stay for a little bit longer just as one would want sunsets to last forever but everything must come to end, even the most beautiful of things.
