1 injured as siblings engage police in shootout

A MAN was wounded in a shootout with the police while two of his brothers were caught on Tuesday morning, July 3, in Barangay Catarman, Liloan, Cebu.

Superintendent Randy Korret, the town police chief, identified the wounded as Aldrin Kiseo Pontanar. He was brought to a public hospital for treatment.

Pontanar's brothers, Rafael and Eugene, were detained.

Investigation showed that the siblings got involved in an altercation with a certain Robinson Conahap.

Conahap allegedly confronted the suspects after they almost hit his relative, a woman and her daughter, while walking past 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Two of the suspects pulled out their guns and aimed them at Conahap and his companions and threatened them.

Conahap reported the incident to the Barangay Intelligence Network, who in turn, informed the police station.

Four police officers requested backup after the suspects fired two shots. Eight more officers led by Korret went to the area.

The Pontanars ran and hid inside a hut in a compound. They refused to surrender and engaged the police in a shootout.

The exchange ended after Pontanar was hit.

A .45 pistol and a .357 magnum revolver were confiscated from the suspects loaded with bullets. Empty shells were also recovered in the compound.

Korret said they are investigating the background of the suspects, who may be involved in robberies and shooting incidents in the past. (KAL/SunStar Cebu)
