MORE than 180 tons of garbage were collected by the Cebu City Department of Public Services (DPS) from the streets on Monday, January 16, a day after the Sinulog grand parade at the South Road Properties (SRP) and fiesta masses in honor of the Child Jesus at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu.
DPS head Engr. John Paul Gelasque said they finished the cleanup activity at 6 a.m. Monday after around eight hours of clearing the roads in SRP and uptown and downtown Cebu City of trash left by people who took part in the celebration on Sunday, January 15.
The cleanup activity was participated by 1,300 street cleaners from the DPS, Parks and Playground Commission, City Environment and Natural Resources Office and other departments.
Gelasque said the trash weighing a total of 181.4 tons were mostly composed of plastic bottles, styrofoam food containers and plastic bags, among others.
The DPS head said there was less garbage in SRP than in the city proper.
"Nagtuo mi nga bulk sa basura didto sa SRP kay didto man ang Sinulog karon sa among pagpanglimpyo ang bulk naa sa city proper. Naka-penetrate mi og tarong alas 10 na sa gabii tungod sa kabaga sa mga tawo gikan sa SRP," Gelasque said.
(We thought the bulk of trash was in SRP where the Sinulog was held but during the actual cleanup, the bulk was in city proper. We were only able to penetrate the area at 10 p.m. due to the large number of people in SRP.)
The DPS asked the help of the Cebu City Police Office to disperse the crowd having street parties in places such as Mango Avenue, Juana Osmeña and Fuente Osmeña so they can properly park their garbage trucks.
This year’s activity yielded more garbage than in 2020’s Sinulog Festival, where 131 tons of trash was collected. (PAC, TPT)
