TWO women were arrested in separate anti-illegal gambling operations in Brgy. T. Padilla, Cebu City, Sunday morning, Aug. 20, 2023.

The Parian Police nabbed Rose Cruz Mercado, 21, and Mary Jane Collama, 20, both residents of Brgy. Tejero, for their alleged involvement in the illegal numbers game called “swertres.”

The police apprehended Mercado first during their operation at Sitio Eagles in Brgy. T. Padilla at around 9:30 a.m. Collama’s arrest came after an hour at Sitio Freedom, Brgy. T. Padilla.

The police maintained that the two, who posed as “cashiers” of illegal swertres, violated Republic Act 9287, which seeks to impose increased penalties for illegal numbers games.

Bundles of play ticket stubs were also recovered from the suspects.

The Parian Police Station, however, declined SunStar’s request to interview the suspects.

The series of police operations against illegal gambling activities were in line with the mandate of the Department of Justice to go after illegal swertres operators across the country. (RJM)
