20 houses destroyed in Tabunok fire

AT LEAST 17 families living under the Mananga Bridge in Barangay Tabunok lost their homes after late morning fire struck them today.

Fire Officer 1 Jennifer Cuartel of the Talisay City Fire Department said the fire occurred at Sitio Mananga 1 in Barangay Tabunok at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 18.

Cuartel said that after receiving the alarm, firefighters led by Senior Fire Officer 1 Rodolfo Luage conducted an intensive firefight at the area.

The fire reached second alarm, prompting firefighters from nearby towns and cities to respond.

The fire was eventually put out at 10:30 a.m.

Around 20 houses were destroyed by the fire. Most of the houses were made of light materials.

Cuartel pegged the fire damage at P180,000.

She said based on their investigation, the fire reportedly started at the house of Christian Macaraya.

Macaraya reportedly left his charged cellphone unattended, causing the fire.

After the fire, the Talisay City Social Welfare Office has started listing the affected families for the immediate provision of aid. (JKV/SunStar Cebu)
