5 inmates face raps for mauling to death fellow detainee

FIVE inmates of Cebu City Jail will be facing charges for mauling their fellow inmate to death.

The fatality was identified as Solomon Rosello Jr., a resident of Villagonzalo 2, Barangay Tejero.

Cebu City Jail Warden Renante Rubio said the incident happened Saturday, October 6. He did not divulge the names of the suspects pending the resolution of their investigation.

Initial report showed the motive behind the incident was personal grudge.

Rubio said the leader of the cell where Rosello was placed reportedly instructed four other inmates to beat the victim up.

The jail official said the cell leader was reportedly mad at Rosello, 37, for giving information to the police leading to the arrest of his relatives.

Rubio said Rosello was reportedly a police asset, but investigators still have to verify the information.

He further said they will check why the jail guards failed to stop the mauling.

Rosello was rushed to the jail's clinic when he fell unconscious. He was later brought to a public hospital in Cebu City where he was declared dead.

The inmate was brought to the city jail last week after he was caught for violating Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. (KAL)
