FIVE crew members of a roll-on, roll-off (Roro) vessel were rescued after a tank of chlorine leaked after it fell and hit another tank while being loaded into the vessel.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023, while the crew of M/V Filipinas Surigao del Norte was preparing for a trip to Samar.

Initial investigation revealed that the crew was loading chlorine tanks into the vessel when one of the tanks fell and hit another tank, causing the leak.

The five crew members were brought to a nearby medical facility as they came in contact with the chemical.

Senior Fire Officer Wendell Villanueva, of the Cebu City Fire Office, said the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Special Rescue Force, together with BFP-Cebu City Fire Station personnel and Emergency Medical Services, responded to the incident.

"Cebu City port was under the command and control of the Bureau of Fire Protection. Passengers trapped inside the vessel were safely rescued and evacuated and further given medical care," said Villanueva. (RJM)
