A 56-YEAR-OLD farmer suffered injuries after being hacked by his neighbor over a dispute regarding charcoal.

The incident occurred in Purok Orchid, Barangay Cabcaban, Barili town, southwest Cebu around 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023.

Police identified the victim as Felipe Geromo Natinga, married, a resident of the said place, while Eduardo Abarquez Canaña, 62, also a farmer, was named as the suspect.

Natinga sustained wounds to his both arms.

Police Master Sergeant Pablito Caadlawon of Barili Police Station told SunStar Cebu that the suspect was intoxicated when the incident occurred.

Caadlawon said the victim’s daughter informed them about the incident at 5:30 p.m.

He said Natinga was making charcoal when the suspect hacked him without any provocation.

The victim got wounded in his both arms after he parried the weapon.

He immediately ran towards his house to ask for help.

Canaña was rushed to Barili District Hospital for treatment.

The suspect, on the other hand, was arrested in his residence during a follow-up operation.

But on Monday morning, after being pardoned by the victim and agreeing to cover his medical bills and other medications, Canaña was released from jail.

According to reports, the victim could earn P220 for each sack of charcoal sold.

"Sauna pani sila nagkabangi sa luna nga gitikad sa bukid! Nagsuyaay naka-unag "uling" sa kahoy ang biktima nangayog bahin ning suspek apan wala mosugot ang biktima hinungdan nga nagpatay," dugang ni Caadlawon.
