THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Central Visayas (BFAR 7) has continued to support small-scale fish farmers to ramp up the region’s fishery production, particularly in the aquaculture sector.

The BFAR 7, through its Cebu Provincial Fishery Office (PFO), distributed this month at least 57,000 tilapia fry worth P18,800 to several backyard tilapia farmers in the different cities and towns in the province, the agency reported on its Facebook page on Dec. 9, 2021.

BFAR 7 personnel facilitated the provision of tilapia fry, responding to the request of the nine local government units (LGUs) in Cebu, and at the same time meeting the demand from tilapia producers in the province.

The packs containing tilapia fry were sent directly to the recipients while some were transported to the LGUs that later delivered the packs to the identified fish farmers.

The distribution involved Cebu City LGU, which received 10,000 tilapia fry; Mandaue City, 2,000; Naga City, 2,000; Carcar City, 5,000; Toledo City, 11,000; Minglanilla, 7,000; San Fernando, 6,000; Oslob, 7,000; and Dalaguete, 7,000.

The tilapia fry was sourced from one of the BFAR 7 facilities: the Lake Danao Freshwater Fish Farm in San Francisco town on Camotes Islands.

For its part, the BFAR 7 seeks to assist the small-scale fishing communities to improve their livelihood and income, and empowers them to become significant contributors to the region’s fish sufficiency level.
