Cebu City Jail to get new sewage tank

A NEW underground sewage tank at the Cebu City Jail male dormitory that will address complaints on stench coming from the facility will be built soon.

The Cebu City Council yesterday approved Councilor Jerry Guardo’s resolution charging P2.6 million against Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. funds for the construction of a new septic tank.

The tank, which will be built in the detention facility in Barangay Kalunasan, will be 25.2 meters in length, 4.3 meters in width and 3.8 meters deep.

Jail Warden Renante Rubio said that although they regularly desludge their septic tanks, they still need another sewage tank to cope with the jail’s population.

The existing tank, Rubio said, was built for only 1,800 people. At present, there are 5,000 inmates in the facility.

“This is everybody’s concern kay hugaw, baho man gud ni siya (it’s dirty and it stinks). Gipa-explain na mi sa residents kung unsa ang among gibuhat. Pag may baho di ra man ang sa gawas ang maapektohan, apil man kami diri sa sulod (Residents have already asked us to explain what we are doing to address the problem. But the stench does not only affect those outside since we can also smell it inside),” he added.

In a separate interview, Councilor Dave Tumulak, deputy mayor for police matters, said the City Government is extending assistance to the city jail to prevent any impending health concerns that might affect both the residents and inmates.

“The warden has received complaints from residents who cannot stand the stench. We decided to help because the stench and the filth are coming from the facility,” Tumulak said in Cebuano. (RTF)
