Cebu City, Talisay won’t have water for 12 hours

CONSUMERS in some parts of the cities of Cebu and Talisay are advised to store water for a 12-hour interruption on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019, due to a major leak repair.

The affected areas are parts of Gorordo Ave., Gen. Maxilom Ave. MJ Cuenco Ave., Mabolo, pier area, Labangon, Banawa, Mambaling, Basak, Kinasang-an, Pardo, Quiot and Talisay City.

The portion of a 700-millimeter-diameter transmission pipe in Pleasant Homes, Labangon, Cebu City will be repaired starting at 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The 12-hour repair work will include the draining of the pipe which will take hours since the pipe carries thousands of gallons of water per hour.

A leak repair includes welding or replacing the damaged portion of the pipe.

Aside from stopping the loss of water, repairing leaks ensures the improvement of the water pressure and supply in the areas served.

Under MCWD’s Water Safety Plan, leaks need to be repaired immediately to prevent any contamination.

The water district is appealing for the affected consumers’ cooperation and patience.

Meanwhile, a Cebu City councilor is pushing for a water impounding facility in each of the city’s 80 barangays to help ensure a stable water supply in the event of a water shortage during a dry spell.

During the City Council’s regular session on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019, Councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr. moved his proposal for first reading. The council referred it to the committee on laws under City Councilor Raymond Alvin Garcia.

Based on his proposed ordinance, funding for the construction of the water impounding facility and its maintenance will be included in the budget set aside for the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW), which will implement the project.

It also tasks the City Health Department (CHD) to monitor and check the water quality to ensure it is safe for public use.

The DEPW and the CHD will come up with the implementing rules and regulations within 30 days after the ordinance is passed. (PR, PAC of Superbalita Cebu/PJB)
