THE Cebu Provincial Government will set aside up to P100 million for the purchase of rice that will be sold at a lesser price in the different municipalities throughout the province.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia made this announcement during a meeting with the Provincial Development Council, Provincial Peace and Order Council, Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Friday, October 6, 2023.

The move is in response to the rising prices of basic commodities in the market, including rice.

During the meeting, Garcia expressed interest to reopen the Tindahan sa Kapitolyo, a one-stop shop for those in need or those classified as poor by the municipal social welfare and development office (MSWDO) and the provincial government.

The Capitol will purchase the NFA rice and sell it for P25 per kilogram.

In addition to the NFA rice, Garcia intends to set aside an additional P100 million for the purchase of commercial rice, which will also be sold at a lower price.

However, she must first enter into negotiations with the commercial rice dealers.

Once the program is started, each family may purchase five kilos of rice every week.

The "Bugasan sa Kababayen-an program," which was previously implemented by the Capitol, involved giving 10 sacks of NFA rice to each barangay in the province so that they could sell it to locals for less.

Garcia wanted that each municipality set aside a space for the Tindahan sa Kapitolyo initiative so they can expand the program. (ANV/TPT)
