A PEACEFUL and safe elections on May 9, 2022 in Cebu.

This is the aim of the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO), which will hold the Provincial Peace Covenant (PPC) signing on Tuesday, March 22.

Col. Engelbert Soriano, the CPPO director, said in a press conference on Monday, March 21 that the purpose of the covenant signing is to show people that the police force is fair and it wants nothing but peace in the upcoming local and national elections.

The covenant signing will be attended by the incumbent officials who are seeking fresh terms, their challengers and officials from the Police Regional Office Central Visayas, Commission on Elections, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Some of the confirmed attendees are Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, Vice Governor Hilario Davide III, some of the provincial board members and congressmen.

Garcia is seeking a fresh term, and one of her challengers is former Tourism secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano. Davide is seeking a new term as vice governor and he is being challenged by Garcia’s running mate Dr. Maria Theresa Heyrosa.

According to Soriano, the PPC signing is a venue where the candidates can show that they are committed to violence-free polls.

“The purpose of this is to show the people who are going to vote for these candidates that we do not have any intention to go beyond what the law is required,” said Soriano.

The police official assured the public that the CPPO has prepared its security plan for the local campaign period, which begins on Friday, March 25.

“We have been through a lot of disasters such as Covid and Typhoon Odette. This time we should assure that our local election will not be one of those disasters,” said Soriano. (HIC)
