TO anticipate the possible increase in the number of dengue cases with the onset of the rainy season, the Provincial Government is working with education officials in installing ovitraps in public schools.
Cyril Pangatungan, one of the Provincial Health Office's focal persons for dengue, said that the ovitraps was first initiated in Cebu.
He said that they already started making the devices and will implement it as soon as the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is signed.
The ovitraps are made from used plastic bottles and used window screens, which are hung inside or outside homes.
The devices are then painted black and placed in stagnant water in order to attract mosquitoes. Tardy Guardiario, PHO focal person, said the devices were first tested in Camotes Island.
It was also used in a research study to see the effectiveness of the device. He said that it is inexpensive and it's an eco-friendly device.
From January up to May this year, 799 dengue cases have been reported in the province.
The number of cases last year was 2,060. (Michael Rey Cortes, CIT-U Intern)
