Facility to house helicopters, other aircraft to be built

A ROTARY hangar for helicopters and a fixed-wing hangar for airplanes will soon rise inside the Mactan-Benito Ebuen Air Base in Lapu-Lapu City.

Several city officials and key figures attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the P188-million facility on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023.

The project is under the Tatag ng Imprastraktura para sa Kapayapaan at Seguridad convergence program, a joint project of the Department of National Defense and the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Lapu-Lapu City was chosen as one of the recipients.

Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan posted on social media that the hangars will be used as a maintenance bay for aircraft engines to ensure that aircraft are in optimal condition, and enhance Air Force operations.

Lapu-Lapu City Lone District Rep. Cindi King-Chan said the new air units will support law enforcement, improve rescue operations, boost disaster response, as well as contribute to the island’s security.

Construction is expected to be completed in July 2024. (NPG)
