FARMER Roldan Cuyos Bernido visited his friend’s house to play mahjong in Purok 2, Barangay Tag-amakan, Asturias town in southwestern Cebu Sunday afternoon, June 19, 2022.

Police investigation did not say if he was lucky in the tile-based game, but one thing will never happen again: He cannot play with his friend because he was shot dead by an unidentified assailant after their game.

Bernido, 54, succumbed to gunshot wounds in the head, shoulder and in the back of his body.

The Asturias Police Station has a motive behind the attack on Bernido, a Tag-amakan resident; it also has the identity of the person who possibly carried out the crime but it has refused to divulge the details because it does not want to preempt its investigation.

Initial investigation showed that Bernido went to his friend’s house to play mahjong at 3:30 p.m. Bernido was traveling back home around 5 p.m. on his motorcycle when he was shot repeatedly by the assailant.

Upon hearing the gunshots, a village watchman (tanod) rushed to the area where he heard the gunshots and he saw the victim already on the ground, covered in blood.

The watchman reported the incident to the Asturias Police Station at 5:45 p.m. Sunday. The area where the crime happened is located around 20 kilometers from the Asturias Police Station.

The Asturias Police Station has coordinated with the Scene of the Crime Operatives for an autopsy on the victim’s body.
