A HOMEGROWN Cebu firm is offering a solution to address stinky garbage woes of local government units and schools.

Lactobiotics Worldwide Inc., a Cebu-based company that developed the more popular Lacto Pafi probiotic health drink, will provide Enzumo Plus for free in exchange for a one-time treatment of landfills in barangays and even cities.

"I am willing to do a demo and share what we have," said Engineer Gigi Sanchez, chief executive officer of Lactobiotics Worldwide Inc.

Enzumo Plus is an organic disinfectant developed by Sanchez, from its good bacteria science of lactobacillus. Sanchez is also behind the company's other popular brand LactoVitale, another probiotic drink. Both brands have been in the forefront in the early 90s in promoting local organic health drink.

Lactobacillus eats waste and turns it into lactic acid, thereby eliminating the growth of bad bacteria.

Sanchez said that waste, if left untreated and allowed to flow to the seas, can result in degradation of the oceans.

“Everything is connected. The awful things we do here in the mainland, if we just let it flow to the seas, it can kill the oceans, too – the resources there, the fishes and other marine lives. So, if we don’t take care of our wastes here, chances are they pile up higher and higher in the landfills, thereby causing diseases to us humans, and into the oceans, killing the marine lives,” she said.

Thus, she believe there is a greater need to share the technology due to the growing threat to the environment and people's health.

With Enzumo Plus, this problem can be prevented from happening, she said.

To apply this, the solution can be diluted in water and then sprayed to the wastes, and right away the citronella scent replaces the foul odor.

"It is the bad bacteria that causes the foul smell coming from the decaying wastes. With the foul smell gone, flies and disease-causing insects also go away with it," she said.

Sanchez said with the bad bacteria gone, flies and mosquitoes will also not thrive in the dumpsites.

"This is one of the reasons why we want to partner with local governments," Sanchez said.

"Just provide us with a tank and water and I will provide the solution for free," Sanchez said.

School partnership

Several resorts, hotels and industrial firms are already using the technology. "Hotels are already using Enzumo Plus for use in their septic tanks," Sanchez said.

She added the company plans to partner with schools too, noting that they have their own wastes that can become a hive for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Enzumo’s citronella scent lingers after the substance is sprayed into the waste, she said.

To apply it, just combine the solution with water and spray it in dengue-infested areas (where dengue lay their eggs) to prevent it from propagating.

Moreover, Sanchez said their product, since it is 100-percent organic, is "not harmful to humans, animals and aquatic life," that it can be used as insect repellant for adults and children. (SunStar Philippines)
