Inmate shot dead by jail officer

AN INMATE was shot dead by a jail officer after he ran amok inside the Cebu City Jail and stabbed four other inmates at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 12.

The inmate, identified as Glenn Albures, who hailed from Butuan City, and was serving time for the case of arson was killed when he tried to stab the jail officers responding to the commotion.

According to Supt. Renante Rubio, jail warden of the Cebu City Jail, jail officers were responding to the call of inmates inside the Ward 4 on the first floor who were trying to rush the wounded outside to get medical help.

Albures, using an improvised ice pick, stabbed four of his fellow inmates and attempted to do the same to the jail officers which prompted them to shot him.

"We tried to revive him but to no avail," Rubio said.

Two inmates were treated inside the city jail while two were in critical condition and were brought to a hospital, Rubio said.

Rubio assured that the situation is now contained and they are now conducting investigation on the incident.

Visiting rights of families were not suspended while inmates also volunteered to look for and surrender other improvised weapons that may still be present in the facility, the jail warden said.
