Learning continues behind bars

THE Talisay City Jail Male Dormitory launched recently the “Kasama Ko, Tutor Ko” program where inmates get an opportunity to learn in jail.

In the program for inmates or Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL), PDLs who are graduates of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Alternative Learning System (ALS) or those who are college graduates take the time to teach their fellow inmates.

The tutorial, which runs for two hours from Monday to Thursday, follows the teaching structure of ALS.

Jail Chief Inspector Mary Jane Inopia, warden of the male dormitory, said that despite the lack of facilities, they gathered 24 volunteer tutors and 60 PDLs.

Their challenge, she said, is to sustain the program. (CNU Intern Jencelee Angela Quirante)
