THE Department of Energy (DOE) has encouraged local government units to adopt waste-to-energy (WTE) technology amid criticisms, particularly from environmentalists.

On Wednesday, December 7, 2022, the agency held a forum at the Bai Hotel in Mandaue City, calling all concerned government agencies to work together to realize the potential of WTE technology.

Charisse Pascual, DOE’s science research specialist, pointed out that many Philippine investors are looking to put their money in it.

According to www.worldenergy.org, WTE technology consists of “any waste treatment process that creates energy in the form of electricity, heat or transport fuels (e.g. diesel) from a waste source.”

Pascual said there are already 13 WTE facilities in the country, six of which are operational and seven are still under development. (HIC, PJB)
