Modern PUJs to ply Cebu streets

THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) yesterday said the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) will begin its task in Cebu by fielding modern public utility jeepneys (PUJs).

LTFRB 7 Director Ahmed Cuizon said the operators will be fielding modern PUJs in two missionary routes that LTFRB will open for the benefit of business process outsourcing (BPO) firms and medical establishments.

“These routes will primarily serve workers of the BPO industry, who are presently the biggest contributors to the local economy, as well as hospitals and medical institutions,” Cuizon said.

Cuizon said they are also providing public transportation support to two big infrastructure projects in Central Visayas, namely, Terminal 2 of Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) and Panglao International Airport in Bohol.

“Both facilities will open in the second half of the year and we intend to support them with new generation buses and PUJs which are reliable, efficient and environment-friendly,” Cuizon said.

Last Feb. 22-23, the LTFRB 7 conducted a successful modern PUJ roadshow, which was organized as part of Cebu City’s 81st Charter Day celebration.

“It was attended by hundreds of jeepney operators who were excited to see for themselves the future of the PUJ industry. The public also viewed the jeepney protypes and took free rides in an e-jeep model unit that went around city hall,” Cuizon said.EOB
