TWO motorcycle riders were racing each other when one of them lost his life and the other suffered a serious injury.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 14, 2023, along the national highway in Barangay Tapon, Dalaguete town, southern Cebu.

Fernando Monceda, 51, a married resident of Barangay Mananggal in the said municipality and a guard at a cockpit arena, died on the spot.

The condition of the other bike rider, Joceller Anobling, a 23-year-old single from Barangay Atabay in Alcoy town, was critical.

Police Staff Sergeant Jerson Alcantara, traffic investigator at the Dalaguete Police Station, told SunStar Cebu that Monceda was operating a Yamaha Gravis scooter and Anobling was driving a Rusi motorcycle when they collided head-on with the truck coming from the opposite direction as they encroached the opposite lane while maneuvering a curve.

Monceda died on the spot, while Anobling was brought to Carcar hospital.

"Kurbada man unya na overshot ang duha ka motorsiklo! Sa ka kusog sa impact layo ilang nalagputan. Patay diretso si Monceda," Alcantara said.

(The two motorcycles overshot the curve! Due to the force of the impact, they were thrown far. Monceda died right away).

The Isuzu cargo truck driven by Ervin Jay Basilisco, of legal age, from Dipolog City, was going to Carcar City to deliver a load of motorcycles.

Basilisco is being held at the Dalaguete Police Station.

Monceda's 51-year-old wife, Tessie, claimed that she already accepted the fate of her husband.

She declared that she was ready to settle the matter with the truck's driver and the relatives of the other victim.(GPL, TPT)
