Pagasa: Extreme heat to continue in Cebu despite sporadic rainfall

A STATE meteorologist has issued a weather forecast indicating the likelihood of rain showers while emphasizing that sweltering heat will continue to dominate Cebu.

Weather expert Jhomer Eclarino from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan stated on Monday, September 25, 2023, that sporadic nighttime rains are typical despite the presence of heat during the day.

Eclarino said that on Sunday, September 24, they recorded a heat index of 38°C, which falls within the category of severe caution.

The heat index represents the impact of excessive humidity on extremely high temperatures, reducing the body's ability to cool itself.

The weather specialist said the discomfort develops as air temperatures and relative humidity increase.

He advised the public to stay hydrated and provide sufficient ventilation for heat indices between 33°C and 41°C to avoid probable heat-related problems like sunstroke, cramps, and heat fatigue.

He also advised them, especially if they work outside, to stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. if possible, because the peak heat index usually happens at that time.

He claimed that for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 26 and 27, respectively, the heat indices are expected to climb as high as 41°C.

Eclarino said that while Cebuanos may experience extreme discomfort due to excessive heat, rain may fall in the evening.

There is a strong likelihood of thunderstorms and rain showers during the late afternoon and into the evening, he said.

According to him, the southwest monsoon, also known as habagat, is what causes the localized thunderstorms that deliver the rain, which he claimed only last for an hour or two.

Eclarino emphasized the need for constant vigilance, pointing out the possibility of abrupt weather changes and advising locals to stay informed by regularly checking weather reports. (KJF)
