THE Asturias police believe that the shooting death of Manguiao barangay captain Mario Tundag, 57, and his wife Edna, 49, was work-related.

The couple was on board their motorcycle and was passing by the Poblacion Central Elementary School in Asturias when they were shot several times by motorcycle-riding assailants around 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2023.

The incident was captured on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in the area.

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Gifter Sucalit, deputy director for operation of the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO), said they received reports that the village chief strictly enforced laws in their barangay.

“Ang atong gitutukan karon kining iyang trabaho kay naa tay information nga nakita na which may lead sa pagsulbad,” Sucalit said.

(What we are focusing on now is his work because we have information that may lead to solving the case.)

But Sucalit said they are also considering other motives.

Sucalit said they have obtained videos from the CCTV cameras installed in the streets that would help them locate the culprits.

“Naa natay nakuha nga CCTV. Hopefully, naa tay makita nga positive nga makatabang nato sa pag locate aning mga suspetsado riding in tandem,” Sucalit said.

(We already have the CCTV footage. Hopefully, we can find something that will help us locate the riding-in-tandem suspects.)

Meanwhile, the family of the victim said that Tundag received numerous threats to his life prior to the ambush, according to Major Alden Zambrano, chief of Asturias Police Station.

Zambrano said they still have no witness to the crime.

The Asturias police chief said they have secured four CCTV cameras from the area but they have to hire experts to enhance the murky footages. (AYB/GPL/TPT)
