Police on alert after new governor declared in Negros Oriental

TENSIONS at the Provincial Capitol rose after the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) ordered Governor Pryde Henry Teves to step down, prompting police to be on alert.

The recount conducted by the Commission on Elections showed that Teves’ opponent, Roel Degamo, won the May 9, 2022 gubernatorial election after the commission declared Ruel Degamo, another candidate, a nuisance candidate.

According to Brigadier General Roque Eduardo Vega, Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO 7) director, they are currently monitoring what is happening in Dumaguete City, the province’s capital, to make sure things don’t escalate.

However, he said he is confident that DILG in Central Visayas Director Leocadio Trovela is on top of the situation.

“Our police officers are on alert to react to any untoward incident. Director Trovela is managing well with the smooth transition and we are just waiting for his order if we need to step in,” Vega said in a mix of Tagalog and English.

The police official called on the camps of Teves and Degamo to exercise restraint and avoid violence.

Teves had said he would remain as the province’s governor until he received a court order directing him to relinquish the post.
