Proposed Chinatown ‘to boost tourism, local businesses’

SAYING that it will boost tourism in the city, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he supports the proposed measure that will establish a Chinatown Center in the downtown area.

In his news conference yesterday, Osmeña said the move means more business for the Cebuanos. “It has growing potential. It depends on many things but it can be a growth area.

It’s a possible plus factor for the city if it’s well accepted,” he said.

The mayor said it can also help the City’s economy as it will attract more local and foreign tourists, including the Chinese.

“It’s not about whether they deserve it or not. It has to do with the industry helping support our economy because we have 11 flights from China everyday and it’s growing very fast. If we develop this concept of a Chinatown in Cebu, it could mean a lot of business for the Cebuanos. The important thing is the business interest for Cebu,” Osmeña said.

Councilor Jerry Guardo recently filed a proposed ordinance creating a Chinatown Center in the downtown area to show the Cebu City Government’s support to the Filipino-Chinese community. (RVC)
